Minor vs Major Car Service: What's the Difference

Book your service

Keeping your car regularly serviced is one of the best ways to ensure it stays safe, efficient and reliable on the road. But when booking a service, many drivers come across two common options: minor servicing and major servicing.

If you’re unsure what the difference is, you’re not alone. Understanding what each service includes can help you make the right choice for your vehicle and avoid unnecessary wear or costly repairs later on.

In this guide, we explain the difference between minor and major services, what each typically includes, and how often to book them.

What is a Car Service?

A car service is a routine inspection and maintenance check carried out by trained technicians to ensure your vehicle is operating safely and efficiently. Servicing helps identify small issues before they become major problems and keeps important components in good condition. Regualr car servicing helps to:

  • Improve vehicle reliability
  • Miantain fuel efficiency
  • Extend the lifespan of your car
  • Protect resale value
  • Ensure your vehicle remains safe to drive

Most manufacturers recommend servicing your car once a year, or every 10,000-12,000 miles, whichever comes first.

What is a minor service?

A minor service is a basic maintenance check designed to keep your vehicle running smoothly between more comprehensive services. It focuses on essential components and fluids that experience regular wear during everyday driving. A typical service may include:

  • Engine oil and oil filter replacement
  • Checks of brake components
  • Tyre inspection and pressure check
  • Fluid level checks and top-ips (coolant, brake fluid, washer fluid)
  • Battery health check

A minor service is usually recommended once a year or at intervals set by your vehicle manufacturer. It’s a quick and effective way to ensure your car continues to perform as expected.

What is a major service?

A major service is a far more comprehensive inspection of your vehicle. It includes everything covered in a minor service but goes much further, with additional component checks and replacements.

A major service may include:

  • Engine oil and oil filter replacement
  • Air filter replacement
  • Cabin/pollen filter replacement
  • Fuel filter replacement (where applicable)
  • Spark plug replacement (for petrol vehicles)
  • Brake inspection and possible adjustments
  • Full safety inspection of key components
  • Steering and suspension checks
  • Exhaust system inspection
  • Comprehensive diagnostic checks

We recommend getting your petrol major service every 4 years or 40,000 miles and diesel major service every 6 years or 60,000 miles

This is our general guideline; however, you should always refer to your vehicle manufacturer's recommendations for servicing and note that driving conditions, mileage and vehicle age also affect servicing needs.

Skipping regular servicing may seem like a way to save money, but it can often lead to bigger repair bills in the future. Small issues that go unnoticed can develop into serious problems if left unchecked. Routine servicing helps to detect potential faults early, maintain manufacturer standards, improve driving performance and reduce the risk of breakdowns.
